Wix, Jimdo or WordPress? The comparison for small businesses
Wix, Jimdo or WordPress compared: prices, effort, Google, data protection and switching, with real provider prices and a clear recommendation for each type of business.

If you want to build your website yourself, you almost always end up with the same three names: Wix, Jimdo or WordPress. All three work, but they suit different businesses. Here is the direct comparison with prices I checked on the providers' pricing pages for the German market, and an honest recommendation. I build websites myself, so let me say up front: none of the three is bad, and I earn nothing from any of them.
In short
Jimdo is the simplest and works well for a small business-card site. Wix offers more design freedom and many add-on features, but costs a little more. WordPress is the most flexible and often the cheapest in the long run, but requires you to take care of updates and security yourself. One important difference: you cannot take a Wix or Jimdo site to another provider, a WordPress site you can.
The three at a glance
| Feature | Wix | Jimdo | WordPress |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | site builder with hosting | site builder with hosting | free software, you need hosting |
| Getting started | design the page with templates by mouse | site in a few steps, little design needed | rent hosting, set up WordPress, choose a theme |
| Design freedom | high | rather limited | very high |
| Updates and security | done by Wix | done by Jimdo | done by you or your service provider |
| Moving to another provider | no, only the domain | no, only the domain | yes, with all content |
| Free plan | yes, with a Wix address and Wix ads | yes, with an address on jimdosite.com | software free, hosting costs money |
According to W3Techs, WordPress is used on 39.5 percent of all websites, Wix on 4.2 percent and Jimdo on 0.3 percent (as of November 2026). WordPress is released under the free GPL licence, the software itself costs nothing.
Which is cheaper, Wix or Jimdo?
Regular prices without promotions in Germany, checked in November 2026:
| Provider | Plan | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jimdo | Start, 12-month term | €12 | €144 |
| Jimdo | Grow, 12-month term | €20 | €240 |
| Wix | Light, annual plan | €16.66 | €199.92 |
| WordPress at STRATO | hosting Basic, domain included | €5 | €60 |
Wix includes the domain in the first year, Jimdo in the first contract term and STRATO includes one domain permanently. On regular price alone, Jimdo Start is cheaper than Wix Light, and WordPress with cheap hosting is considerably cheaper again. With WordPress, though, there are often costs for premium themes or plugins and, above all, your time for maintenance and updates. A detailed three-year cost comparison is in How much does a website cost in 2026?.
Wix: lots of freedom, lots of features
Wix suits you if you want to control the design yourself. You drag elements on the page to where they belong and can add features such as booking or a shop via apps.
What to watch out for:
- According to Wix, the site only runs on Wix's servers. If you switch later, you rebuild and only take copy, images and the domain with you.
- According to Wix, blog posts currently cannot be exported to other platforms.
- If you cancel the plan, the site stays online on a free Wix address with Wix ads.
Jimdo: simple and fast
Jimdo suits businesses that want a decent, plain site quickly and do not want to spend much time on design. The interface is deliberately simple.
What to watch out for:
- The design options are narrower than with Wix or WordPress.
- A Jimdo site does not move with you either. For switching providers, Jimdo itself recommends copying the text page by page and saving all images.
- The free plan runs on an address like name.jimdosite.com. For a business that is not a professional appearance.
WordPress: flexible, but you are responsible
WordPress is a system you install on rented hosting. Almost anything is possible, from a simple site to a shop, and you can move to another provider with all your content at any time.
What to watch out for:
- You have to install updates for WordPress, theme and plugins yourself, otherwise the site becomes vulnerable.
- Every additional plugin is another piece of software that needs maintaining.
- You are responsible for data protection, cookie banners and fast loading yourself.
Why outdated plugins are a risk is explained in WordPress, site builder or hand-built?.
And what about Google?
You can be found on Google with all three. What matters is not the system but good content, clean page titles and descriptions, fast loading on phones and a well-kept Google Business Profile. How well your site does technically is shown by the free website check.
Data protection
With Wix and Jimdo the provider takes care of hosting, but you are still responsible for your privacy policy and any embedded services. With WordPress you decide everything yourself, including whether fonts are loaded from Google's servers, for example. What your site loads on the first visit and whether you need a cookie banner is shown by the free cookie banner check.
Which solution suits whom?
| You want | Then this fits better |
|---|---|
| a simple site quickly, without much designing | Jimdo |
| to design yourself and add features via apps | Wix |
| full control, room to grow, the option to move at any time | WordPress |
| not to deal with the website yourself at all | a solution from a service provider |
The fourth row is not a trick: many business owners notice after a few months that they lack the time for the website. Then a site built at a fixed price is often the more relaxed choice. My packages are on the prices page.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Wix or Jimdo?
For a simple site with little effort, rather Jimdo, for more design and add-on features, rather Wix. On regular price alone, Jimdo Start is cheaper than Wix Light.
Can I switch from Wix or Jimdo to WordPress?
Yes, but not at the push of a button. The site is rebuilt in WordPress, you take over copy and images and transfer the domain. Redirects from the old addresses are important so that you do not lose your Google rankings.
Is WordPress really free?
The software, yes. Hosting and domain cost money, often plus premium themes or plugins.
Which system does Google like best?
Google does not prefer any particular system. Content, technology and usability are what count.
